You said you mounted the directory with cifs on the frontend, so I'm
assuming that you're exporting it with samba on the backend.  You might
try running mythbackend as a user other than root so these files are owned
by someone else and see if you cn read them on the frontend.  There's no
reason to run mythbackend as root with the proper file permissions in place.

If you do this, you'll need to chown the existing files so mythbackend
can still delete them when requested since they were originally owned
by root.
