What, like Windows Media Center? A scrollable 'page' of album covers
can let you quickly jump to the album you want (provided you remember
the cover of course) and can be much more intuitive (IME) than
navigating multi-level directories, for many 'normal' users. Of
course, when you have an organised hierarchical directory structure
and hundreds of albums, it can be quicker to navigate through the FS
directly to the folder.

Perhaps the second folder-navigation approach could be like MythVideo
(in that when you browse, any IMDB covers are displayed as you reach
video files) so that when you navigate to an album folder/file, the
appropriate album cover art is displayed?
