Look at /usr{/local,}/share/mythtv/themes/classic/tvmenu.xml at example
of how to use EXECTV to kick off xawtv (and tell Myth not to use the
capture card). Just put the same in the tvmenu of the /menu/ theme
(i.e. not a UI theme) that you're using. (Although you might need to
use something else--like MPlayer--instead of xawtv if you're using ivtv
and it still doesn't work with xawtv. I have no idea if does, but you
could find out from IvyTV's web resources or an e-mail to the ivtv lists.)

And for what reason do you need to /watch/ through MythTV to record the
game? Believe it or not, my Myth box actually records TV when I'm not
watching it so I can watch it later. ;) You could do exactly the same
with a game--just split the output with one side going directly to the
TV and the other side going to a capture card).
