Have you run revdep-rebuild recently? Perhaps a library is broken.
Alternatively, start the emerge again in another window and poke around
in /var/tmp/portage/myth<version> and find the config.log. Copy it
somewhere safe and then search through the file until you find the part
that is supposed to detect the DVB setup. Might give a hint why it's not
working.

Don't suppose you'd hand compiled MythTV on this system in the past and
stuck it in /usr/local/bin? "which mythtv-setup" should confirm where
it's being run from.

Don't think so. I've bootstrapped an entire MythTV install from stage
one in a chroot without a configured kernel and it still had DVB stuff
in it.
