How often is "every so often"?
I'm assuming you're US based with your comast email addy.?
Here in the UK, on a "whenever we make an update" type schedule, the 
cableco often remotely restart the boxes, usually when there has been a 
channel lineup change (addition, removal, shuffle etc etc).
My telewest box for example always starts on channel 890 (one of the 
worst help channels I've ever seen) when they have reset it (or I've 
pulled the power out when it starts to get tempermental).
