In addition to the suggestions you're already heard about pushing
"R"ecord and viewing the Live TV program group, the best solution for
your family is to stop watching Live TV. Live TV is there for those
who don't yet understand (despite, in your case, having owned a
ReplayTV) that the beauty of using a digital video-recording system is
the decoupling of the act of watching a program from when it's on.

I can count the number of times I watched live TV in five years of
owning a TiVo on the fingers of one hand, and the only times I've used
MythTV's LiveTV is to verify that a video source is working.

So, schedule all programs your family is interested in to
record. While a program is recording, watch something else! Or, if
your daughter like, totally, has to watch a program in order to talk
about it with her friends right after it's done, have her start
watching the recording about 20 minutes into it. This way she'll be
able to skip over commercials and be done about when the program
actually finishes.
