It's simply not possible with the simple IR receivers of the sort you find
on the lirc home page.  IR receivers that actually use a serial protocol
should work just fine.  Some of the ones that should work are the IRMan, the
IR-3, the UIRT and the UIRT2.

There are also some IR receivers that connect directly via USB, like the
Tira, and the USB-UIRT, although the USB-UIRT isn't offically supported in
lirc.
