...But aren't HDMI and DVI practically the same (given that you can  
get a cord that converts the two, no adaptor hardware required)?

Let's face it, there'll never be an "ideal frontend" because once we  
have a machine with a 4"x4" footprint (just an example), someone is  
going to make one in a 2"x2" footprint, with nearly twice the  
capabilities, but using 100% proprietary hardware, and we'll want  
that ;)
