Okay, here is some further info...
I did another removal of all packages with sql in the name.  Interesting
after a reboot a mysqld still shows up in services within the MCC GUI. 
However the 'mysql' that used to be listed alongside 'mysqld' is no longer
there so it must have been related to the older revision number.  I
reinstalled the original default revision by urpmi mysql hoping that I
could fix the corruption.  No such luck.  Upon trying to start the mysqld
service I get a timout error.  What can I do to complely clear out all the
old mess from the corrupted install?
