I used to use openbox but unless you are running on a P3 or some low end
PC it really makes little difference in the machines performance IMVHO.

There is no integration with Ubuntu other than selecting openbox when
you login via GDM or KDM.

It just *works*

Openbox used to annoy me because it used to forget the audio mixer
settings every login plus I didn't know how to do alt +f3 or whatever to
launch a shell when in myth to see what is going on without exiting -
I'm sure it's possible but I never read any docs.

I use openbox on my epia based system. Nothing really fancy but handy when you want to start mythfrontend within a windows manager. In order to start a shell while the frontend is running, just configure openbox so that more than one desktop screen comes available at openbox startup. To shift from one screen to the next, a Ctrl+Alt+arrow key is enough. To configure openbox, use the utility obconf. You can set up more than two virtual desktops if you want. To configure the app menu that pops up by right-clicking on the desktop background, you can modify ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml or /etc/xdg/openbox/menu.xml for system wide conf. You can also have a background picture by playing with the app called 'feh' and make up some autostart script (using e.g. xinitrc, typically by adding the feh command after starting openbox. This assumes that you don't use gdm but use mingetty and inittab to start X).
Openbox is very thin and that's the whole purpose of this WM. If you want to make it more fancy, you will have to rely on external soft. For example, I could use 3ddesk with a key binding to get a fancy 3D desktop switching. But that was not by using some inernal openbox functionality.
