I suspect you may be right after all.  No, I didn't get any new 
hardware, but I did do some more reading, both on this list and on the 
ivtv list.

I found this:

(Of course, my tuner is the one affected.... But I don't know enough to 
tell if it breaks the driver, or just vbi...)

This affects everyone here using the ivtv 0.10 driver....

I've looked at the referenced patch, but frankly I have no clue what I 
am looking for and how I would go about fixing my driver.

:-(

But at least it's saved me several hundred $$$ in unnecessary hardware.
