The Core 2 Duo will overclock with much more success, which is a cheap
way of getting more value for your dollar. Though in this case the x2
4200 starts off as a faster processor.
One other nice thing about going C2D with an E4300 is that from what I
understand the same socket will work with their upcoming Quad Core
processors, which means it will have more room to upgrade, whereas the
AM2 socket doesn't seem to be slated to last for the next AMD core
design. This is all from memory perusing articles, so I'd check into
this before basing a decision on it...

Another nice thing about going with the AMD in the frontend is the
availability of some really nice HTPC centric motherboards with built
in video and digital audio output. I'm sure eventually these will
become available for the C2D socket (775 iirc?), but as of now they
are not. From what I understand though, the Intel graphics chipset is
getting an OSS driver for linux, developed by intel, which should mean
some good graphics support for HTPC uses.

But it sounds like you are leaning towards Intel (either you have a
mobo already or whatever), and if your set on getting an Intel I would
recommend staying as far away from the P4's as possible, especially
with the release of the E4300, the Core 2 Duo's are much better in
pretty much every way, and use much less power, which is always
important.
