[mythtv-users] GDM help: LIRC fails on autologin

I have a complete working MythTV FE/BE system with one exception: LIRC
does not work after my mythtv xsession autologs in via GDM.
However, if I exit mythfrontend and restart it manually from a
terminal, the remote works perfectly.
I have checked permissions on the associated config files and the
remote works when I start mythfrontend manually as my user or sudo. It
is strange that the only difference in remote performance is whether
mythfrontend was started via GDM or manually.
The machine is an AMD 4600 X2 running Ubuntu Edgy. I'm using a
homebrew lirc_serial receiver.
Any ideas? Here's my mythtv.sh script and gdm.conf, if that helps:
#/usr/local/bin/mythtv.sh
gnome-screensaver
eval `cat $HOME/.fehbg`
mythfrontend&
nvidia-settings -l
mtd -d
exec openbox
#/etc/gdm/gdm.conf
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=al
TIA
