Thus far, I've never installed mythtv from source or svn; I've
always let Gentoo's package manager (portage) do it for me.

I was kind of hoping for less "invasive" things to try :)  Right
now, my system is just barely strong enough to play back most HD
without XvMC, albeit with some jerkiness...  I'm afraid I might
break the overall system if I started messing with self-installed
versions.  (I'm actually mostly concerned with my girlfriend's
frustration if I break something that works good enough for her!)

Anyway, I changed the subject of this email to see if anyone else
can offer any ideas or suggestions.  The following is the output
from mythfrontend when I try to playback with XvMC.  nvidia-drivers
9746, mythtv-0.20_p12172, 2.6.18-gentoo-r6.  Chaintech 7nif2
motherboard, Athlon XP 2500, 2x512 MB RAM.  Using discrete GeForce
6200 AGP card over the onboard graphics.
