If he is intent on Raid 5 and lvm, then he may be contemplating using the
LVM for the parity. This would reduce the number of hard disks lost to
parity wouldn't it?
For example, 12 disks on 3 machines.
1) Each seperate machine has 4 disks, raid 5, and then stiped = 3 disks lost
2) If LVM were to be done across the network, (in theory) only 1 disk lost
Obviously, if you could afford 12 disks, it would be a lot more sensible to
go for a fibre attached raid or proper NAS
