I've found that forcing a SMART full self-test on all drives weekly 
(using smartd) to be very useful - sectors that are going bad get 
noticed, and reallocated before the rot gets so bad that the drive's ECC 
mechanisms can't correct them...  It also lets you spot failing drives 
(through accelerating drive reallocated sector counts) early.

I've only once seen a SMART health failure prior to catastrophic failure...
