...because HD-resolution H.264 is still too hard to decode?

I couldn't play the 1080i test properly on my Athlon64-3200+ with mplayer/codecs from CVS of a few months ago. Maybe its worth updating to see if they've got any better since then...

Whats the best processor anyone's tried it on?

Newer nVidia cards (6600+ I think) have hardware support called 'PureVideo', but thats only used in Windows if you buy a special edition of PowerDVD. nVidia haven't suggested if/how they intend to support/implement this on linux... can it be done using XVMC? If not would nVidia have to invent a new X extension/standard?
Direct collaboration with the MPlayer devs would probably do the trick, but I don't know if either party has the interest or time to do that.

Having said that the only HD channel we can get in the UK is the BBC's, I'm not sure if thats worth upgrading everything for. Unless the Sky HD channels will decrypt with a CAM, but I've read mixed results from people trying to watch Sky's encrypted SD channels that way with Myth.
