Things like contrast aren't such an issue with CRTs.  You should get 
white whites and black blacks regardless.  Dot pitch on a CRT will be 
better than an ordinary SD telly.

The problem you'll probably have is size.  CRT monitors tend to top out 
at 21", which is on the smallish side for a TV (though still bigger than 
mine!.  That said, with everyone upgrading to LCDs you can pick up a 21" 
monitor damn cheap, or free.  I just saw one offered on my local 
freecycle.  Just make sure you get a multisync one, for simplicity.  
Some older monitors don't support very many resolutions/sync rates.
