In that case you could use a KVM switch - these cost about 20 quid (UKP
and USD are somewhere near parity these days, no?:-) But I wouldn't want
to have to do the messing-around with xorg.conf modelines that this
approach might entail.
A dual-headed configuration is quite standard; it would require two
display outputs. They would both be available at the same time (although
you could switch off whichever you didn't want powered-on). You would
need to work out how you want to distribute mice and keyboards between
the two desktops.
