Another solution perhaps, but you then have to contend with anyone in  
your neighborhood using X-10, wireless phone jacks, intercoms and  
other power-line stuff. Basically anyone being fed from the same  
transformer is on the same "network". All the caveats about  
interference in the 2.4 Ghz. band apply to power line stuff as well.

A lot of people claim their wireless network is "working fine" when  
in fact it is not. Since most people are just web browsing and the  
speed of even 802.11b exceeds their internet connection speeds they  
don't notice the multiple re-transmissions etc.

It is a real tribute to the robustness of TCP/IP that these things  
work as well as they do.

Nothing is as reliable as a cat-5/6 cable, and in the end it is often  
less trouble to just go that route.
