At its simplest installing a program on Gentoo is as easy as "emerge
<progname>. Of course you have to wait while it compiles, and if you
are installing something like KDE that can be several hours even on a
fast machine. Updating everything is as easy as "emerge -avuDN world".

Of course sometimes things do not work quite so well, as the recent
problems with non-GTK installs of Openoffice showed. Recent troubles
with avidemux are really upstream problems, not problems with Gentoo
itself.

But you get a binary compiled for your precise CPU, with the compiler
options that are best for your system. RPM and DEB systems have to be
compiled for the lowest common denominator.

But the bottom line is use what you feel comfortable with, and let
others do the same.
