Yeah, I had this issue.  AFAIK, this is a problem with XvMC, and it's
largely unavoidable.  The solution, for me, was to edit the theme and
disable the fade out.  This can be done editing osd.xml for the OSD theme
you're using and changing the <fadeaway> tags to 0.
