OS X should have an MPEG2 decoding codec built in, because it plays
DVDs. I believe it uses the quicktime engine to do that. At any rate,
I have also found Quicktime to be a sad player for large MPEG2 files
over the network. Part of that is, perhaps, because it likes to
preload a lot of the file or something. Either way, just use VLC and
you'll be happy.
