Given that my install was one week ago, I doubt if our different opinions are
due to the document having been improved since I used it. More likely it's
that the omissions and inconsistencies are minor enough that somebody with
enough Linux experience (like me, or presumably you) can work around them so
easily that the gaps are quickly forgotten. If, at the behest of an install
guide, I type the command "foo -b" and Linux replies "command not found," I
know enough to try (on Ubuntu) "apt-get foo". Even if the package name
isn't "foo", I can find it if I'm familiar with the package or by Googling
it, using synaptic, or whatnot. I honestly don't recall exactly what was
missing or confused in the guide, except that it began using X stuff before X
was installed, but I do recall thinking during the process that a complete
Linux newbie could be flummuxed by the instructions. That said, even a
complete Linux newbie could probably manage the job; such a person would just
spend a little more time head-scratching, reading forward and back, and
perhaps Googling to find solutions to minor problems.
