Not necessarily.  I have an Athlon 64 machine running diskless as a frontend
over 100mb ethernet, and don't notice any slowness.  Root and everything
over NFS.  It does HD, too.

Especially since swap would also be on an NFS mounted volume...


Mine is set up with 1gig of memory and no swap configured at all.  Right
now, it's using just over 300meg of memory for programs/libs and the rest is
used up as buffers, which helps with the speed.
