[mythtv-users] backend dies when frontend quits (on single machine)

I have a simple myth trunk setup, with backend and frontend running on one
box.
 
When I exit the front-end, the backend seems to die.  If I check the status
with "service mythbackend status" I see:
mythbackend dead but pid file exists
 
The symptom I experience is that when I exit the frontend, I return to the
mythwelcome screen but it complains that there is no backend to connect
to....
