If you are new to mailing lists it might be easiest to not receive the
digest version of the list, at least at first. There are a lot of
messages on this list at times, but it's easy enough to delete ones you
aren't participating in, or sort them by thread, sender etc.

There are in fact mail clients that can "burst" a digest, essentially
turning it back into the original messages it contains, so you can
respond to each one as if you had received it individually. Such a mail
client can't (AFAIK) be used with the web-based "free" mail services
(anyone bursting the digest with gmail somehow?)

If you get involved with many lists you might want to seriously consider
getting a pop or imap based mail account. This allows you to use a more
capable mail client that can sort your messages for you, thread them and
generally be a lot more useful than some web-based systems.

I do see a lot of people here using the web-based mailers though, and
they don't seem to have much trouble (a common problem being gmail not
sending you a copy of your own posts).

Basically just read the FAQs, read up on list etiquette both in general
and for this specific list, and remember that everyone here is here
because they want to help you.
