The how would you pause live TV? How would you decide after-the-fact
that you wanted to save the recording.

The "record everything" "feature" is not intrusive, and causes no
problems at all except to folks who for some reason like to stare at
empty space on their drives. In fact, you can even specify how much
space to leave empty, if you wanted to do that for some reason.
