With the caveat that I'm using Fedora, not Ubuntu, if you're using a
relatively recent version of Xorg I don't _think_ you need to set the
dot clock or modelines. My TV-out computer uses the following
numbers:

(in the monitor section)
        HorizSync 30.0 - 50.0
        VertRefresh 60.0 - 60.0

(in the display section)
                Modes "640x480"

Let me post those sections of my Xorg.conf. My monitor section is pretty empty, and I have MANY display sections. How should I edit these?

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HP L1706"
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

    Defaultdepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 1
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 4
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 15
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
    EndSubSection

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for the quick reply.
