Damian,

Yes putty is an ssh and telnet client. You need to ensure that ssh is
running on your linux box though.

Do "ps -efl | grep sshd"  that should tell you if it is.

Otherwise use your package manager  yum/apt/synaptic etc to install an ssh
package.

Logging in remotely will really help.
