oprofile detects that the CPU time is being used by a function called
I830WaitLpRing(), which is called from I830Sync(). It isn't immediately
obvious what would cause this.
On a whim, I disabled the textured video adapter (by hacking the
source). This has solved the problem!
I have watched half an hour of recordings with bob and it worked
perfectly. Not only has the excessive CPU usage (and resulting dropped
frames) gone but so has the vertical shimmer.
Next is to post to the xorg list to track down the cause.
