not that my opinion matters, but i'll throw it out anyway. :)
splitting the list has pros and cons, with, i believe, the cons
outweighing the pros. i really like the mailing list, but splitting
is more akin to setting up a forum. since we're a mailing list and i
like 'all' the Myth conversation i would end up subscribing to all the
Myth lists. this sounds fine. however, when you get new users that
are frustrated, or don't really know which list their questions belong
on since they don't necessarily know what their problem is, they will
end up submitting their question to multiple Myth lists. now you've
just increased your list traffic X fold because instead of one post
that is annoying to some users you have X posts across multiple lists
that annoy everyone. :)
aside from the flurry of activity on somewhat off-topic topics lately,
the list does a pretty good job of policing itself. most of the ppl
that have issues with the traffic should either look into another MUA
that handles threading better or set up filtering rules for threads
they are tired of looking at. unfortunately this really is 'their'
problem not the list's; and there are solutions 'they' could implement
to slim the number of messages they see in their inbox.

peace
