In my opinion, very well and yes. For me, it's either that or buy
one of the super-expensive hardware RAID cards (e.g. 3ware). For
home use, I just can't justify the cost.
I've got a 4x400 RAID5 array that has survived a physical transfer
from one case to another; it's also survived at least one migration
to a whole new Linux installation. I had a drive "die" (it was
actually a cabling problem) and the array kept right on chugging
(but with a notification from mdadm). Fixed the "drive" (cabling
problem), upadating the array, and everything is fine.
And from what I understand, the md (multi disk, aka Linux software
RAID) code is quite mature and well-tested. Unless you're doing
unusual things, the likelihood of a problem is quite low.
(Disclaimer: I've never actually looked at the code, I'm just
repeating what I've read in random places, i.e. hearsay ;)
