My Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66GHz handles HD well, and does DD5.1 audio via
the optical audio out.   There have been reports of problems with
playback on very high resolution displays, like 1080p, but that is
probably a fixable software issue.

You also have the option to install Linux on it.   But, since I use a
Mac laptop, I prefer to keep mine Mac OS for all the other media
sharing capabilities.


As for the Apple TV,  not only is it limited to H.264, according to
the specs it's greatly limited on resolutions usable with H.264.   The
best available option is  1280x720 @ 24fps.  So, there would be
significant conversions needed to get to compatible video.
Obviously the Apple TV is geared for people buying their content
through the iTunes store.
