I don't know about Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but I think the Hauppauge card is  
quite popular & well-supported.

Freeview reception is quite poor in my area so I plan to use a DVB-S  
card & satellite dish - you can get a similar selection of channels  
from the Sky satellite without needing a subscription.
