I do not think that you can run a 'master backend' and still have a 
'standard backend' on another machine.

Have you tried running the frontend on the 'standard backend' machine as 
a slave frontend? Or does that frontend 'look' to the 'standard backend' 
for its database and tuners?

YOu have not described how these machines see each other, so it is 
impossible to tell how they interact. For example, if the 'standard 
backend' machine is using the 'master backend' as an NFS attached store, 
the problem may be NFS related, and not myth....

Just thinking... (yes, I know... have to avoid that before noon...).
