Just a datapoint, my back end storage is spread out across 6 disks (4
* UATA, 2 * SATA).  20 RAID1 groups, roughly 40GB a chunk, glued
together with LVM into a single partition.  I/O performance has never
been an issue for me.  It's awfully convenient for upgrading disks.
