Also might be worth noting that when ever I run mythfront end, I do
see the following:

May 11 08:39:06 shuttle lircd-0.8.1[4223]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
May 11 08:39:11 shuttle lircd-0.8.1[4223]: removed client
