Searching for "mysql reset root" with a popular internet search engine
returns: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/resetting-permissions.html

There are many other guides for doing this as well. Reinstalling doesn't
work because it saves your DB (something that would normally make you
happy).
