So I think what you're saying is that  a 4:3  video is only able to be shown
at 16:9 no matter what you do? This is not the norm, by default you should
have the black bars on the side if it's a 4:3 video.

I seem to remember reading on a thread recently that if you're running one
of the latest versions of X-Org you have a new option in your setup
somewhere that lets you choose the aspect ratio of your monitor. I think
this is because something Xinerama is enabled by default and it's causing
problems in the detection of the monitor ratio.
