I'm in Springfield on Comcast. I have an HDHR hooked up, with only
Comcast's "Basic Cable" which is the $5.16/mo package. I'm currently
receiving WFSB, WTXX, WWLP, WGGB, WGBY (and the WGBY additional
channels such as PBS Create), and WTIC in HD using the QAM tuner in
the HDHR. It actually works fairly well, and I've had no real
problems with it.

I can't tell you about the firewire, because I don't have a STB of any
kind. I'm using a PVR-500 and the HDHR to funnel content into my Myth
box.

Hope this helps you out a little. If you have additional questions,
feel free to ask.
