Check your xorg.conf.  Do you have all the extensions loaded:

Section "Module"
   Load           "dbe"
   Load           "extmod"
   Load           "fbdevhw"
   Load           "glx"
   Load           "record"
   Load           "freetype"
   Load           "type1"
EndSection

For whatever reason sometimes these are missing and Xorg eats
resources like crazy.
