But, wouldn't the names to give credit be required?  Or would someone just need to give credit to the MythTV project v.XX ?

No, the GPL recognizes that you might not want to be associated with
a fork of something you wrote, so the GPL requires that anyone creating
a fork clearly mark a fork as such. And since the GPL does not cover
trademark rights, the trademark holder can always insist that fork be
renamed. The trademark, i.e. "MythTV", "Project Grayhem", does not need
to be registered for trademark law to be in effect.
