I solved this problem.

It was caused by having multiple copies of mysql.txt in different 
locations, which contained different IP addresses.

The solution was to delete all copies except for one, which I put in 
/usr/share/mythtv/mysql.txt. Make sure it contains the correct IP 
address and password!

I found info on the web which said that if you also put on in your home 
folder it will over-ride the one above.
