What's particularly more important at this time is the log files
(/var/log/Xorg.0.log*).  There should be two log files, Attach both.

How was your driver installed before?  By hand?  By linux-restricted-modules?
By envy?  By automatix (shrug...)

The only "supported" upgrade route with drivers like that is by
linux-restricted-modules, but that doesn't mean things can't be resolved if you
did it one of these alternate methods.
