When I had this problem it turned out to be not allowing mysqld to talk 
to anything on the local network because of /etc/hosts.allow and 
/etc/hosts.deny. Try adding something like:
mysqld: 127.0.0.1 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
... to /etc/hosts.allow if 192.168.0.x is your sub net and you feel safe 
(w/exposing you SQL data base) on that sub net.
