I may be wrong but I think the discussion about 127.0.0.1 is incorrect
because it appears that  is what he wants from the following lines:

I doubt he is looking to remotely connect his laptop to his master
backend when he travels and  stream videos over the internet. I assume
he wants some way to export a portion of his recorded programs to the
hard drive on the laptop and view them in MythTV that is not connected
to the master backend that records the shows.
