I haven't followed this thread from the beginning so forgive me if  
I'm way off target here, but it sounds like you're having trouble  
with bad sectors on your disk??  Are you familiar with Spinrite from  
GRC?  Almost guaranteed it will fix your drive, regardless of the  
partition or filesystem type.  It's not free but well worth the  
cost.  Check it out at http://www.spinrite.com.
