Thanks! I have had good luck. I do it all the time. vi is my friend.  
It also helps to have a good handle on the database structure that  
mythtv uses. Oh, and mine's around 76M as of this morning:

[mythtv at mythtv2 backup]$ du -h mythdatabase.20070905.bak
76M     mythdatabase.20070905.bak
