I have always thought laptops had IrDA ports which is not the same as 
IR. But I could be wrong, in fact there's a good chance I'm wrong. I 
believe IrDA is designed to only work a meter or so, for wireless 
printing or PDA transfers.

You could always get an el cheapo serial ir receiver though.
